I was watching River Cottage on the telly the other day and Hugh what`s his name was building his own chicken Metropolis. The idea was that if his chickens were happy they would lay a bounty crop of eggs. Hugh was using chicken wire to help build fences to keep the chickens contained in their new surroundings. It was quite an impressive sight to see the birds in their free range environment having plenty of room to run about. The chicken wire was used along the edges of the run just to keep the birds inside. I tried to imagine what it would be like to have fresh eggs for breakfast laid by my very own hens. It must be satisfying when you build an enclosure for your poultry out of wood and chicken wire. Although I`m a city boy at heart the appeal of living off the fat of the land certainly tickles my fancy. I respect the way that people can utilise chicken wire to build runs for chickens that live a healthy and happy life. I know that chicken wire can be used for other purposes as well, but its best when it`s used as it was intended to help build homes for egg laying birds.
